ransition day. When I woke up this morning, everything went really well for me. I was able to get ready for the day and help get Sol off to the bus in time while being able to leave at early enough to pick up Elan (him and Nara were at their mom's for the past week).
I dropped Elan off at child care and spent twenty minutes in the MCTC library before my positive psychology class at 10:10.
After class I spent another half hour in the library working on my HRTB class (reading and replying to posts).
I had a really great workout at the YMCA. I did about 45 minutes of wieght training and then swam half a mile. I didn't include it in my list of goals for next year, but last week I started my journey towards joining the 100-mile swim club at the YMCA. My goal is to log 100 miles before next Thanksgiving. I might be able to meet a secondary objective by logging 100 miles before the Buffalo Triathlon in early June next year. My swimming is improving greatly and so is my confidence.
After working out, I went to my pop-culture class.
My pop-culture power point presentation is due two weeks from today. The subject we're covering is "Heroes" and what they represent in our culture. My power point is going to focus on the opposite of heroes- Villains.
After class I picked Elan up from child care. He was in a great mood. I'm still very happy with his preschool/daycare (Children's Village Montessori). The staff and other children get along with him so well.
After picking Nara up from her bus stop downtown, we headed home.
When we got home, Jessica had dinner ready and waiting at the table.
We sat as a family (Jessica, Sol, Nara, Elan and I) and enjoyed vegan Sheppard's pie and veggie chicken steaks with vegetables.
We then played together as a family (marble madness and wooden trains)for about an hour before watching a family movie. It was an atypical, yet wonderful evening. I can't expect that we'll always have dinner together, and play together, but it's fun to do it when we can.

This morning I helped Sol get breakfast and ready for school.

Jessica started her first day at work after a 13-week leave of absence (for back-surgery) yesterday. Today was day two back for her. She was able to get out of the house before Sol left for the bus.

After Sol caught the bus on time, I cleaned up a little around the house and went to school.

I spent a couple of hours in the MCTC Library studying for my Posi-Psyche test on Monday.

I also spent some time reviewing for the quiz in HRTB that is due before Sunday night.

I was able to receive my grant money remaining from this semester at the Financial Services Office a couple of days ago. Because my award letter finally came, I was also able to officially apply for a student loan to help me get through the next semester and a half. My unemployment is running out and I've had no success at finding a job as of yet.

I went to Pop-Culture Class today, but had to leave 45 minutes early so I could be sure I was home when Sol got home and off the bus. (He didn't have a PCA lined up for today, so I spent the afternoon with him).

It was a great afternoon spending time with Sol. He voluntarily did all of his homework (Math and Grammar/Spelling) and even wanted to do Math flashcards with me for fun!

He and I then went on the computer and joined a Fantasy Basketball League together. He's been showing an interest in fantasy sports, and I thought it would be a good experience for us to join a free league together. I plan on focusing on the "fun" aspect of fantasy sports, as well as helping him understand the importance of having fun over winning or losing. (It's not about winning or losing, it's how you play the game... and ultimately, are you having fun?)

He was on the computer longer than he probably should have been because when it was time to get ready for bed, he acted out a little bit and had a low-level fit.

He did fine getting over it, and took his meds while watching a movie with Jessica and I before going to bed.

I didn't sleep very well again. I kept anticipating Elan waking up, but he didn't until 6:30.

I fed the kids breakfast and helped them get ready for school. When Sol left for his bus, I brought Elan to preschool and Nara to her bus stop. We were a few minutes late to Nara's stop, but luckily, the bus driver waited for her. I am going to make a point to be earlier for Nara's pick up for the remainder of this week.
I went to the MCTC Library and spent the next few hours finishing up a working draft for my American Radicalism Essay which is due tomorrow. I feel like it is almost complete. It could use a bit of editing, but I plan on taking some time from it for readability's sake.

After class I spent time in the computer lab touching up my mid-term AmRad Essay and following up with my English 1111 assignments due before Friday's class.
I checked in about my financial aid on-line and found out I have officially qualified. My award letter is still pending, but I should have it by next week!
My next step is to apply for a child-care grant and appropriate student loans to help me finance the final semesters in my journey towards a two-year degree.
I picked up Elan from preschool before picking up Nara from her bus stop and going home.

We had spaghetti for dinner and Nara did homework while Sol, Elan and I played catch and tag outside for the evening.

The struggle between Sol and I this evening centered around trying to convince him to do homework. We made an agreement, but he didn't follow through with his end of the bargain after we finished playing outside.

I was feeling disappointed, but made it clear to Sol that even though I don't like his choice, I still love him. My disappointment doesn't mean my disapproval of him as a person.

Sunday, 5 December, 2010

Elan woke me up at 7am. Sol and Nara got out of bed around 9:30am. Jessica slept in all morning (she needed the rest because she’s still recovering from her back surgery a couple of weeks ago). I fed the kids cereal for breakfast. Elan watched Star Wars, while Sol, Nara and I continued our Axis and Allies board game (we started a game yesterday. Sol and Nara are playing as the Allied countries Russia, UK and USA, while I play for Germany and Japan). After a half an hour, my parents stopped by the house and picked up Elan and Nara. Nara and Elan spent the day with their grandparents (Sol is my step-son, so he’s not as close with my parents as my other two kids are at this point in our lives).
Sol and I continued to play Axis and Allies for a couple of hours. We ended because of a tantrum (not uncommon, and often a multiple times a day occurrence). I was more proud of how long he went playing the game without having a tantrum. He has an incredibly difficult time overcoming disappointment.
I turned on the Vikings game and spent the next few hours cleaning the house (vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing the floor, washing dishes and other chores).
For the remaining afternoon/evening, Sol seemed to be having a difficult day all of Jessica and I’s interactions were met with hostility. Any time he found a way to calm down, his attitude escalated quickly and with almost no incident or cause. Communicating was very difficult today with Sol.
I went to my parents to pick up Nara and Elan around 8:15pm. Elan fell asleep in the car seat because he was exhausted from spending a fun afternoon/evening at Grandma and Grandpa’s house without a nap. Nara called our friend Emily (she’s the equivalent of her “goddess” Mother, but lives way up north in Shevlin, MN). They had a good, long conversation which lasted until Nara’s bedtime. I was thankful that Nara was feeling better, recovering from strep throat. I was also thankful that her phone call distracted her from the chaos of some more of Sol’s behavioral breakdowns. It was a tough night for Sol and for me. Jessica tucked him in (I usually do at bedtime). Today was a tough day for both of us, but I’m confident that my relationship with Sol only gets stronger after tough days like today.

Tuesday, 30 November, 2010

Jessica and I both woke up this morning to get the kids fed and ready for school. Jessica is still recovering from her back surgery (2 weeks ago from today).
Sol caught the bus on time (he attends the elementary school near our house in New Hope), I dropped Nara off at her downtown Minneapolis bus stop on time for her pick-up at 9:15 (She attends Southside Family Charter School in Minneapolis. Her school doesn’t have access to busing in the suburbs, so I have a bus pick her up near MCTC every day). Elan stayed home with Jessica, but was picked up by my sister for the day around 9:30am.
I spent about an hour writing and editing my essay quiz that was due in American Radicalism 1000.
I spent my class period learning about the Suffrage Movement in the early and Mid-19th Century.
After class I read some more background information for my English paper while eating a lunch that I brought to school.
I spent the next couple of hours in the MCTC Library working on Human Relations Team Building Business class. I read some more excerpts from chapters 1 and 2 in Effective Human Relations by Reece and Brandt.
Next I went to the student financial aid office to verify that my award letter was still pending and to inquire on a more specific date. There was no verification as to when my award letter would be received. Probably either this upcoming Thursday (23 September) or next Thursday (30 September).
After that I went to the YMCA in Downtown Minneapolis and jogged for 20 minutes (approximately 2.4 miles) and swam 8 laps.
My sister dropped Elan off at home and Jessica watched spent the afternoon with him.
I picked up Nara at her bus stop in Minneapoils at 5:45pm and we went home for dinner.
We ate dinner and I helped Nara and Sol with their homework.
Elan, Nara and Sol went to bed at about 9:20pm.
I took the garbage out before going to bed around 10pm.
